Addition with Regrouping Worksheets

Addition with regrouping worksheets with an answer key, made to order. Every problem is stacked in columns the way students work it by hand, and you decide how the regrouping goes: in some column, in every column, in exactly one, or column by column, so a class meeting carrying in the tens for the first time can practice just that step.

What Regrouping Means

When the digits in a column add up to ten or more, the column cannot hold the whole total. In 47 + 38 the ones make 15: the 5 is written in the ones place and the ten is carried into the tens column, which then holds 4 + 3 + 1 = 8, for an answer of 85. That carried ten is the regrouping. Older books call it carrying; the step is the same.

Choosing Which Columns Regroup

Open Choose by column to set each place to Regroup, Don't or Either. Regrouping in the tens only (ones set to Don't, tens to Regroup) gives a sheet where the new step appears in exactly one place, and the next sheet can move it to the hundreds. A column counts as regrouping when its digits plus anything carried into it reach ten, which is how a student meets it on paper.

Carry Boxes and the Answer Key

Turn on Carry and borrow boxes for a small box above each column where a carried digit goes. With Key shows the regrouping on, the answer key writes each carry above its column, so a wrong answer can be traced to the column where it went wrong.
