Polar Graph Paper

Printable polar graph paper for 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Instead of the square grid of ordinary graph paper, a polar grid is built from concentric circles and lines radiating from the centre. A point is located by how far out it sits and at what angle, rather than by how far across and up — which is exactly what you need for polar coordinates, and much easier for anything that turns.

Rings and Angles

Two controls shape the grid. Rings sets how many circles there are, which is the radial scale — ten rings is a sensible default because it makes each ring a clean tenth of the radius. Lines from the centre sets how many radial divisions there are, and it is worth choosing that number for the angle you want to read off:

  • 12 lines — every 30°, the usual grid for trigonometry work
  • 24 lines — every 15°, the default above and a good general-purpose choice
  • 36 lines — every 10°
  • 72 lines — every 5°, for precise plotting

What It Is Used For

In a maths class polar paper is mostly for plotting polar equations — roses, cardioids, spirals and circles all become straightforward to draw by hand once the grid matches the coordinates. Outside the classroom it is used for anything measured as a bearing or an angle: radar and antenna patterns, wind roses, sound and light distribution charts, and circular designs in craft and quilting where the pieces repeat around a centre.
