Reading an Analog Clock

The short, thick hand is the hour hand and the long, thin hand is the minute hand. The minute hand goes once round the face every hour, moving one small mark for each minute, so each numbered position stands for five minutes: the 3 is 15 minutes, the 6 is 30 and the 9 is 45.

The hour hand does not jump from one number to the next. It moves smoothly all hour long, so at half past three it sits halfway between the 3 and the 4, and at a quarter to four it is three quarters of the way there. Every clock on these sheets is drawn that way, so a student who learns to read the hour hand from these sheets is learning it the way a real clock works.

Choosing a Sheet

Read the clock sheets show a time and leave a line to write it on. Start with whole hours and half hours, move to quarter hours, then to every five minutes, and finish with any minute. The face can show all twelve numbers, only the 12, 3, 6 and 9, or no numbers at all.

Draw the hands sheets give the time in digits and an empty face. They show quickly whether a student understands the hour hand as well as the minute hand.

Elapsed time sheets show a start clock and an end clock and ask how much time has passed, including across the 12. Add time sheets show one clock and ask what the time will be after a stated number of minutes or hours. The answer key gives every answer, and each version of a sheet has its own key.
