Isometric Graph Paper

Lines or Dots

The same grid comes two ways, and which one to print depends on what will end up on the page. Lines give you an edge to draw along, so they suit measured work where the drawing follows the grid: cubes, stairs, pipes, floor plans and exploded views. Dots stay out of the way of the finished drawing, which matters when the lines you add are the point of it — see isometric dot paper for that version.

Both are on the same triangle spacing, so a drawing started on one transfers square for square to the other.

Choosing the Triangle Size

The square size control sets the grid spacing here too, and the triangles follow it. Quarter inch is the default and the usual classroom choice — small enough for a detailed drawing, large enough to count across. Half inch suits younger students and quick sketches. Below about an eighth of an inch three sets of lines start to read as grey rather than as a grid, so keep the line weight light if you go that fine.

What It Is Used For

In maths and design classes isometric paper is where students first draw solids to scale: nets and volumes in geometry, cube-counting puzzles, and surface area problems where seeing three faces at once makes the question obvious. Engineers and woodworkers sketch joints and assemblies on it because measurements along all three axes stay true. It is also used for pattern work that repeats on a triangular grid — quilting, beadwork, tiling and hex-based game maps.
